He Left the Ninety-Nine… For Me
The sun was setting. The shadows stretched across the hillside. Ninety-nine sheep were safe, huddled together in the fold. But one… just one… had wandered off.
Most shepherds would’ve called it a loss. “I’ve still got ninety-nine. Let the one go.”
But not this Shepherd.
Jesus said:
“What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?”
— Luke 15:4, NKJV
Until he finds it.
That’s the kind of love that refuses to quit. It doesn't clock out at 5PM. It doesn’t give up after a few prayers. It climbs hills. It battles storms. It tears through the night with one focus: bring my child home.
Now let me tell you a real-life version of this parable.
His name was Zacchaeus.
He wasn’t just lost—he was despised. A tax collector. A sellout. The kind of man everyone talked about behind closed doors. No one invited him to dinner. No one stopped to shake his hand. They crossed the street when they saw him coming.
But Jesus?
Jesus crossed the city just to stand beneath his tree.
“Zacchaeus, make haste and come down, for today I must stay at your house.”
— Luke 19:5, NKJV
Read that again.
“I must…”
He didn’t say “I want to,” or “maybe later.” He said must. Love compelled Him.
Because love always leaves the ninety-nine.
Love always climbs the hill.
Love always calls us by name.
That’s what makes God's love so different.
It’s not performance-based.
It’s not earned.
It’s not reserved for the polished, the perfect, or the popular.
Zacchaeus didn’t clean up his life first.
He didn’t write a long apology.
All he did was climb a tree.
And all Jesus did… was see him.
Friend, maybe today you feel like that one lost sheep. Maybe you're Zacchaeus—hidden behind layers of success, titles, money… but inside, you know you're missing something. You've tried everything—business, distractions, even religion—but still feel like you're on the outside looking in.
And maybe, just maybe… you've climbed a tree.
You're curious. Watching. Hoping.
Wondering if He sees you.
Let me tell you something real:
He does.
Right now, Jesus is standing at the base of your tree. And He’s saying:
“Make haste and come down…”
— Luke 19:5, NKJV
“Because today—not tomorrow, not next Sunday—today I must be with you.”
So what does this mean in everyday life?
It means you’re never too far gone. Not for Jesus.
It means no mistake can cancel His pursuit of you.
It means the moment you turn your heart—even a little—He runs to you.
It means your name is known in Heaven… even if the world forgot you.
You don’t have to fix yourself first. Just respond.
He will lift you on His shoulders.
He will walk you home.
And all of Heaven will rejoice:
“Rejoice with Me, for I have found My sheep which was lost!”
— Luke 15:6, NKJV
God’s love isn’t passive—it pursues.
It’s not generic—it’s personal.
It’s not conditional—it’s eternal.
Whether you’re lost in sin, tangled in shame, or just quietly drifting… He’s coming for you.
He’s still the Shepherd.
Still the Savior.
Still the One who says:
“I must stay at your house today.”
And that…
Is love.
